GERMANY, Bad Zwischenahn. The brand manufacturer Rügenwalder Mühle has significantly increased its sales in 2021. For the first time, the company sold more vegan and vegetarian products than classic meat and sausage products.

Food manufacturer Rügenwalder Mühle has increased its sales figures and once again achieved double-digit growth last year. In 2021, the company achieved total sales of € 263.3 million (2020: € 233.7 million). Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 12.7%. In the process, the veggie pioneer sold more vegan and vegetarian products than classic meat and sausage products for the first time last year.

Rügenwalder Mühle builds on market leadership

Total sales of the food producer amounted to around 35,000 t in 2021. This represents an increase of 13.6% compared to 2020. In the veggie segment, RM further expanded its market leadership: While sales of vegan and vegetarian meat alternatives increased by 33.2% year-on-year in the overall market, according to IRI market research, Rügenwalder Mühle reported a sales increase of 41.6%.

Rügenwalder Mühle's product range currently includes around 25 classic meat and sausage products and approximately 30 vegan and vegetarian meat alternatives. In the self-service sausage market, the company recorded a minus in 2021, but outperformed the overall market by percentage points (Rügenwalder Mühle minus 1.9%, overall market minus 3.9% compared to the previous year). Rügenwalder Mühle describes its delivery ratio of 96.6% as very positive, especially against the background of the tougher raw material situation.

Manufacturer has further plans to expand

The strengthened market position is also reflected in the number of employees, which the company increased by 9.5 % to 851. Rügenwalder Mühle still plans to expand its capacities. The family-owned company has acquired a new production site in Goldenstedt (Vechta district) in Lower Saxony and transferred it, along with all its employees, to a subsidiary on May 1, 2022.

Launch of two product lines

The new facility, with 8,000 square meters of production space, is now to be built up in order to grow further in the area of vegan and vegetarian meat alternatives. The company says it plans to start production of two product lines at the new site this year. With the new production facility, located around 60 kilometers from its headquarters in Bad Zwischenahn, Rügenwalder Mühle aims to ensure short transport routes and regional production.

In order to continue to grow steadily and to be able to expand the production capacities of the veggie sector, the food producer from Lower Saxony will remain on the lookout for additional new locations or expansion opportunities in 2022.
