USDA makes bonus purchase of chicken dark meat

The USDA plans to buy up to $30 million of chicken dark meat for federal food nutrition assistance programs, according to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

The purchase will assist food banks and other federal food nutrition assistance programs offered recipients a wide variety of healthy products, Vilsack went on. The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Services buys food each year for programs including the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, the Summer Food Service Program, the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program and the Emergency Food Assistance Program.
