US meat and poultry cold storage totals higher

Supplies of frozen meat and poultry in the USA were higher in April, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Total frozen poultry supplies on 30 April, 2013 advanced 11% from compared to March, and up 8% from 2012, NASS reported. Total stocks of chicken climbed 8% from the previous month and gained 11% from last year. Total pounds of turkey in freezers increased 14% from last month and rose 5% from 30 April, 2012.

Total red meat supplies in freezers climbed 5% from the previous month and gained 3% compared to 2012. Total pounds of beef in freezers declined slightly from the previous month and slipped 2% from last year.

Frozen pork supplies were up 8% from the previous month and up 6% from last year. Stocks of pork bellies advanced 10% from last month but dropped 25% compared to year.
