German meat producer Tönnies Fleisch and discounter Aldi Süd are set to introduce a new consumer information app as a trust-building measure. Smartphone users will soon be able to obtain information on the origin of meat from a special code printed on the pack.
Tönnies' transparency tool is called fTrace and the company is currently trying to persuade processors to adopt the system. Information is provided on the date of slaughter, cutting and packing, and also on the place of manufacture. Initially the system will only apply for pork.
