Demolition crews have torn down much of a closed meat packing plant in southern Indiana so that a persistent fire could be put out after four days.

Fort Branch Fire Chief Pete Lewis says the demolition was needed because insulation was smoldering inside the concrete walls of the former Emge plant. The fire was first reported early Saturday and continued smoldering and sending smoke over the town until Tuesday's demolition.

Gibson County emergency management director Terry Hedges says fire inspectors weren't immediately able to determine what caused the fire, which is believed to have started in an area without electricity.

Excel Corp. closed the plant in 1999 and no longer owns the site in the town about 20 miles north of Evansville.
