Smithfield Foods, America's largest pig farmer and processor, announced at ANUGA in Cologne its commitment to distributing pork across the EU from 1 January 2010 through expanding its pan-European partner network.
With EU consumption of premium pork cuts rising faster, Smithfield Foods wants to meet demand and grow its US pork business. This move has been driven by Inflationary pressures in the meat market as consumer demand for premium pork cuts in the expanded EU consistently outstrips supply.
John Allton Jones, CEO of Smithfields Foods UK, stated, the business was aiming at the foodservice and food manufacturing sectors. Germany was a key country for Smithfield, he said. The pork would come mainly from the US but also from other Smithfield operations in Europe, he said.
