Danisco A/S has concentrated its research and development activities in the field of natural food protection in Brabrand, Denmark. Laboratories in Beaminster in the UK, and Niebüll in Germany will be closed.
The new centre for food protection will focus on meat and dairy products but also food protection research into baking, culinary and beverages is being strengthened. For Dansico food protection is a rapidly growing segment with considerable potential, which is best exploited by joining resources and capabilities.
The company has therefore decided to close their laboratories in Beaminster in the UK, and Niebüll in Germany to create the new platform under one roof at an investment of around DKK 10 million, says Jan Sindesen, President Danisco Specialities.
The new platform will have 15 employees and is classified as L3, allowing for work with pathogenic and tainting microorganisms. With the new lab facilities joined in one place, Danisco has a globally unique setup. Close to 25% of all food in the world goes to waste because it is spoiled. The market for natural solutions is around USD 250-300 million, growing 5-10% a year.
