The France-based company bioMérieux announced the launch of a new, innovative food safety testing method of Salmonella
bacteria in food and environmental samples.
This new food safety solution utilizes recombinant bacteriophage (phage) proteins for the targeted capture and detection. The VIDAS UP Salmonella
(SPT) technology complements the company's VIDAS E. coli
O157 (including H7) phage technology for the detection of Escherichia coli
O157:H7. The recombinant phage technique was developed by the German biotech company Hyglos GmbH and has been licensed exclusively to the French company.
is a bacterium that causes one of the most common intestinal infections worldwide (Salmonellosis). In the United States alone it is implicated in more than one million cases of foodborne illness annually, according to a 2011 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of these cases, approximately 20,000 result in hospitalization and 378 result in death.
