"Meat the Need" asks the government to buy pork

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) published a proposal named “Meat the Need”. In it NASDA asks the government in Washington to buy meat as pork and turkey as well as dairy products.

Due to sagging farm prices in the last months “Meat the Need” wishes the federal government to purchase three installments of 100 million pounds of pork products within 180 days, one installment of 100 million pounds of turkey and three installments of 75 million pounds of cheese and other dairy products within 120 days.

The products are supposed to go to food banks, school lunch programs or foreign military food assistance. The costs are calculated to lie around $2 or $3 billion dollars. The proposal calls for the funding to come from unspent stimulus dollars.
