Maple Leaf Foods has issued the following statement in response to inquiries related to the timeline of the posting and distribution of our recalled product information.

“We announced an extended recall at a news conference on the evening of Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 9:30 p.m. We believed that it was important to take broader preventative action to respond to the situation promptly, comprehensively, and to do what is in the best interests of consumers.

In an effort to make the list accurate, given the long list of products, we took much of Sunday to ensure its accuracy and validate it with the CFIA. This extended recall was done on a precautionary basis. It was posted and distributed at approximately 4:30 p.m. on the afternoon of Sunday, August 24, 2008. It is our belief that customer recall processes cannot begin until we publish specific product information, which was done as of 4:30 pm, Sunday afternoon.”
