International Competence Center on Meat Quality founded

The Max Rubner-Institute (MRI) will be extended by an International Competence Center on Meat Quality, declared Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection Ilse Aigner during the annual symposium “Kulmbacher Woche”.

The Competence Center was supposed to develop European standards for the quality of the most important meat varieties, Aigner said. Another goal is to raise awareness for the safety of meat products alongside the complete food store chain.

The new Center will be attributive to the MRI-Institute for Meat Security and Quality. During the next years the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) wants to provide up to EUR 3.5 million for this reason. Almost EUR 9.4 million were invested in the MRI in Kulmbach in the last years. Including the director at least three to four new positions for scientists should be generated in the course of the establishment of the Competence Center.

Prof. Gerhard Rechkemmer, president of the Max Rubner-Institute, welcomed the decision of the Federal Ministry to focus on the international integration of the MRI. Within the next year the new Competence Center will install a “Summer School for Research in Meat Quality” for foreign scientists.
