GERMANY, Potsdam/Berlin. Under the auspices of the Max Rubner Institute, the 65th International Meat Researcher Congress (ICoMST - International Congress of Meat Science and Technology) will take place in Germany and is themed ‘Meat for Diversifying Markets’.

Worldwide, meat and meat products are becoming an intrinsic part of evermore diversifying markets. With this in mind, we need to consider future scenarios concerning potential developments and options in a globalized world.

On one hand there are interventions from the political sphere but there is also a demand for innovation from within the meat sector itself. Will globalized free trade and digitalization have a significant impact on the meat industry? Will values such as regionalization and quality gain importance in the future? To what extent does consumer behaviour lead to market driven innovations? Is the meat sector able to push innovation on its own terms?

Germany is one of the most important nations in the world with regard to animal production, slaughtering, cutting and in particular processing of meat into an almost unattainable quality and variety of meat products. The fair intends to strengthen this reputation by and, in addition, the importance of the country in research in the meat sector and the related technological developments as well as the economy. The exchange of the newest scientific knowledge offers an excellent opportunity to strengthen the country's position in the future and expand the network.

After the end of this year's ICoMST 2018 in Melbourne/Australia, the planning of the ICoMST 2019 in Potsdam/Berlin has entered an important phase. The programme covers the following main topics in focus: Consumer behaviour, ethics, microbiology, food safety, sustainability, muscle biology, metabolomics, animal welfare, emerging technologies, digitalization and emerging topics.

An event like this cannot be financed by the revenues alone. The project is financed by the participation fees, but requires the help of sponsors, either through direct financial support or through a donation, grants or by taking over the financing of parts of the framework programme. In addition, there will be an exhibition during the congress.
