EU Slaughterhouses across the EU may have to take on special officers for animal welfare to ensure that animals are humanely treated at the time of their killing.

With the approval of this proposal by all 27 member states, the EC's proposal will "integrate welfare considerations into the design of slaughterhouses", which will require the killing techniques to be monitored continuously.

It has been reported that slaughterhouses will have to employ a specific person responsible for animal welfare and ensure that their staff are properly trained and certified.

Small slaughterhouses will be exempt from this requirement.
