US May red meat production down 1% from 2012

Total commercial red meat production in the United States during May 2013 was 1,882,861.9 t, up 1% from April but down 1% from May 2012, the US Department of Agriculture said in its latest Livestock Slaughter report.

Pork production was 861,825.5 t, down 2% from April and down 1% from May 2012. Commercial hog slaughter totaled 9.22 mill. head, down 1% from the previous year. The average live weight of slaughter hogs was 125.2 kg, down 0.45 kg from the previous year.

May beef production was 1,010,603.8 t, up 5% from April but down slightly from 1,012,418.2 t in May 2012. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.86 mill. head, down slightly from May 2012. The average live weight of cattle at slaughter was 584.7 kg, up 4.1 kg from May 2012.

Veal production was 4,127.7 t, a record low for May, equal to levels in April but down 12% from May 2012. The average live weight of calves at slaughter was 120.7 kg, down 13.2 kg from the previous year.
