The Top 100 of the meat industry: the afz and "Fleischwirtschaft" rankings. Some companies are posting strong growth, but the market overall is consolidating.

Over the last ten years, the Top 10 meat industry companies have more than doubled their cumulative sales. This is shown by the current "Top 100 Meat Industry Companies" rankings presented once again by the editorial offices of the afz and "Fleischwirtschaft" at the leading Anuga trade fair.

The ten biggest companies in the meat and meat products industry accounted for cumulative sales of nine billion euros in 2006. This figure has risen to an estimated EUR 20 billion today. Some manufacturers have increased their income several times over – especially the Tönnies group, but also Rothkötter, Müller, Böseler and Willms, to name just a few. The supermarket butchers have also posted strong growth.

   -   (6) Rothkötter-Gruppe: Euro 1,0740 million
   -   (7) Müller-Gruppe: Euro 903 million
   -   (8) Kaufland Fleischwaren: Euro 839,13 million
   -   (9) Zur Mühlen-Gruppe: Euro 825 million
   - (10) Sprehe-Gruppe: Euro 813 million


The other side of the coin, however, is that a number of producers have gone out of business in this decade. The market remains highly competitive and the challenges are as diverse as ever – no change in these regards over the last ten years.

The main topics which the players in the meat industry had to deal with last year included the animal protection and animal welfare discussion, thriving exports (especially to Asia), and thus the high price of pork. The suppliers of meat and meat products have to meet a range of expectations relating to the growing desire for high quality, local produce and animal welfare on the one hand and the lucrative bulk business in foreign markets on the other. The latter, however, is helping to improve value creation with regard to the entire carcass.
