Around 26.9 mill. pigs were kept in Germany as per 3 May, 2018.

According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of pigs has thus fallen by around 690,000 or 2.5%, after an increase of 1.5% in November 2017.

One of the factors contributing to the decline is the decline in the number of fattening pigs. This is currently around 11.8 mill. animals. In November 2017 there were 12.2 mill. fattening pigs, an increase of 3.2%.

This development is also evident in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, the two federal states with the largest pig population. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the number of fattening pigs fell by 3.3% to around 3.4 mill. In Lower Saxony around 88,000 fattening pigs (- 2.1%) were kept less than six months ago.

The number of pig farms in Germany also continued to decline - to just under 23,000. Compared to November 2017, the decline was 2.3 %.
