Astral Foods Limited (Astral) has successfully acquired certain poultry assets previously owned by Argyle Farms (Pty) Ltd (Argyle), currently in provisional liquidation, in KwaZulu-Natal.

Gary Arnold, the Director for Business Development at Astral, reports that: “The assets that were tendered for are a broiler farm known as Thornhill Farm and the day old chick hatchery operation. Both bids were successful for these assets located in Wartburg, KwaZulu-Natal. With the strategic expansion of the poultry processing operation at Mountain Valley additional broiler rearing capacity is required, and with constrained capacity at National Chicks, the largest day old chick producer in the country, the Argyle hatchery will fulfil an important role in Astral’s growth in the region and nationally.”

Astral recently approved capital expenditure to expand the Mountain Valley poultry processing facility in KwaZulu-Natal that was acquired in August 2011. Strategically this operation is well positioned to expand Astral’s footprint in the KwaZulu-Natal market in the fresh and value-added poultry segments.

National Chicks is a well-known international supplier of hatching eggs and day old chicks to both the Astral group and non-integrated independent operations in South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique.
